Raspberry Pi Tricks

  • Set-up (raspberry pi)
    • Want to access the PI from your laptop?  You’ll need to configure wifi, ssh, and VNC.
    • wifi – startx (get to UI), Run, wpa_gui, Scan for your network
    • wifi – if on a CoderDojo pre-install, the network icon is in the upper right and must be configured that way (wpa_gui isn’t there anymore)
      • belkin.4912, password available from Ruth
    • SSH-In raspi-config, under Advanced, Enable ssh
    • Create unique Hostname – In rasps-config, under Advanced, Hostname
    • VNC
      • sudo apt-get install tightvncserver
      • tightvncserver
      • vncserver :1 -geometry 800×600 -depth 24
  • Set-up (laptop)
    • Windows
      • SSH – install Putty.  ssh pi@
      • VNC – install Real VNC viewer.  Connect to :1
    • Mac
      • open Terminal or install RealVNC viewer
        • ssh pi@
        • vnc://pi@:5901
  • Using Remote access to Raspberry Pis
    • Windows – putty – ssh pi@
    • Mac, open Terminal – ssh pi@
    • vncserver :1 -geometry 800×600 -depth 24
    • Windows – VNC – Connect to :1
    • Mac, open terminal – VNC://pi@:5901
